How to Succeed as a Single Man in the Swinging Lifestyle

Most single men who struggle in the lifestyle aren't bad guys. A handful of avoidable habits, and platforms that never manage their numbers, do most of the damage. Here's our honest guide to profiles, messages, club etiquette and getting invited back.

How to Succeed as a Single Man in the Swinging Lifestyle

We’re Sean and Sophie, the couple behind SwingDesire. We’ve been together for more than twenty years, came into the swinging lifestyle around two years ago, and launched SwingDesire in September. We’ve met plenty of single men through clubs, socials and our own events, and we’ve got some thoughts worth sharing.

Single men aren’t something we personally look for as a couple, but that’s never stopped us getting to know them. In fact, every single man we’ve met in the lifestyle has been friendly, genuine and respectful. We’ve never experienced any pressure or had a bad encounter with one.

That’s why we sometimes think the reputation single men have in this lifestyle is a little unfair. A lot of the frustration around single men, in our view, comes down to how certain platforms operate. When profiles aren’t properly verified, fake accounts go unchecked and membership numbers become heavily unbalanced, genuine people end up paying the price.

This guide looks at why single men sometimes struggle to make connections, what helps, and why we think platforms carry real responsibility for getting that right.

Why Do Some Couples Say No to Single Men?

It’s worth answering this properly, because pretending the friction doesn’t exist helps nobody.

Some of it is simply preference, and that’s completely valid. We don’t personally look for single men ourselves, and that’s got nothing to do with anything wrong with the men we’ve met, it’s just not what we’re looking for sexually. Plenty of couples feel the same way, and plenty don’t, and neither is a judgement on single men as a group.

The bigger issue, in our experience, is structural. Many UK sites and clubs have far more single men than couples or single women, and when nobody manages that balance, the result is predictable. Decent guys end up standing at the edge of the room through no fault of their own. Unverified profiles make it worse. A fake “couple” that turns out to be a single man using someone else’s photos makes couples wary of every single man who messages them, even though the genuine ones had nothing to do with it. We’ve covered that problem in How to Spot Fake Profiles on Swingers Sites.

Poor behaviour from a minority, pushy or explicit messages, ignoring what a couple’s profile says, not taking “no” well, does real damage to how single men get seen generally. That’s not something we’ve personally run into, but it’s worth separating out from the structural problems above when you’re thinking about why some couples hesitate.

Understand What Couples Are Actually Looking For

Not every couple wants the same thing. Some enjoy MFM, one woman and two men, and it’s a common reason couples look for a single man. Others want friendship and a good social circle first. Some aren’t looking to meet single men at all, and that’s just as valid.

The biggest mistake you can make is treating every couple as a potential match. Read their profile properly, respect their boundaries, and respond to what they’re actually looking for rather than what you hope they’re looking for. Very often, being welcomed into the community starts somewhere much simpler: being someone people genuinely enjoy talking to.

Build a Profile That Gets Taken Seriously

A complete, specific profile is one of the strongest signals you can send. Couples can tell the difference between a profile written with care and one that exists just to get past the sign-up form.

  • Write it yourself, in your own words. A few honest lines about who you are beat a list of clichés.
  • Be upfront about your experience. Being new isn’t a disadvantage. Pretending to be experienced usually shows.
  • Say what you’re looking for. Couples reply to something specific far more often than to “ask me anything”.
  • Keep your photos consistent. If your pictures look like three different people, you’ll be passed over, even when there’s nothing wrong.
  • Don’t open with an explicit photo. Being in the lifestyle doesn’t mean every woman wants an unsolicited picture of your penis. Some might appreciate it, but plenty won’t, especially before you’ve even said hello. Respect, personality and a genuine connection get you much further than assuming what she’s into.

The Messages That Get Ignored, and the Ones That Get Replies

The messages that get replies read like they were written for that couple. Mention something from their profile, ask a genuine question, and talk to both of them, not just one partner. It takes more effort than a one-line opener, but it’s the difference between being one of fifty identical messages in their inbox and being the one they actually answer.

Practical Things That Make a Real Difference

  • Check before you turn up. Not every club or event admits single men, and many manage numbers on the door. A quick check saves an awkward evening.
  • Make the effort. Appearance, hygiene and dressing for the venue matter more than most men expect. It shows you’ve taken the night seriously.
  • Go to socials, not just play nights. Single men who build friendships first get invited back far more often than those who treat every night as leading somewhere.
  • If a profile says no single men, believe it. Messaging anyway wastes your time and theirs, and it gets remembered for the wrong reasons.
  • Take rejection well. A polite no isn’t an invitation to try again. How you handle it says more about you than almost anything else.

Club and Event Etiquette for Single Men

Standing at the edge of the room hoping to be noticed can feel awkward for everyone, you included. There’s nothing wrong with walking over for a friendly chat. Read the room, respect personal space, and never assume someone being friendly means they’re interested in more. When it comes to play, an invitation and clear consent are essential, and if a couple makes it clear they’re not interested, move on with a smile rather than hovering. Treat both partners with the same respect, not just the one you’re drawn to. If club nights are new to you, our guide to your first time at a swingers club covers the wider etiquette.

From First Message to First Meet

When a conversation is going well, the same safety basics apply to you as to everyone else: meet somewhere public first, talk openly about what everyone’s comfortable with, and never assume a meet is owed just because the messages went well. Our guide to meeting people safely in the swinger lifestyle goes into the practical side.

How SwingDesire Works for Single Men

Single men aren’t an afterthought on SwingDesire. Every member, single or part of a couple, goes through the same ID and liveness verification before their profile is approved. Verification can’t guarantee anyone’s behaviour, but it makes it much harder for fake or misleading profiles to get in, which gives couples far more confidence that the single man messaging them is who he says he is. That works in your favour.

We also manage the balance of our membership rather than letting numbers run unchecked. That applies to every singles profile type, not just single men, so availability for some profile types may be limited from time to time, with a waiting list when places are full. It’s how we keep the community comfortable for everyone, and it’s the same reason our own events set aside a dedicated allocation for single men.

SwingDesire is for UK residents aged 21 and over. Joining is free, and new members currently get three months of Premium free, which includes messaging, winks and groups.

FAQs for Single Men in the Swinging Lifestyle

Can single men join swinging sites in the UK?

Yes. Most UK lifestyle sites, including SwingDesire, welcome single men alongside couples and single women. Some manage the balance of membership types, so availability can occasionally be limited, but that’s about keeping the community balanced, not excluding single men.

Why do some couples avoid single men?

Often it’s just preference, which is completely valid, not every couple is looking to meet single men. Where there’s real friction, it’s usually structural: too many single men on sites and at venues where numbers aren’t managed, plus fake profiles that make couples wary of everyone. Poor behaviour from a minority adds to the reputation, but it’s not the full picture.

What’s the best way for a single man to start in the lifestyle?

Write a complete, honest profile, be upfront about your experience, and say clearly what you’re looking for. Go to socials as well as club nights, and message couples about something specific in their profile rather than sending a generic opener.

Do couples only want single men for MFM?

No. MFM is a common reason couples look for a single man, but plenty want friendship and a social connection first, and some don’t meet single men at all. Reading each couple’s profile is the only way to know.

Do single men have to pay to join SwingDesire?

No. Joining is free, and new members currently get three months of Premium free, which includes messaging. When the free months end, you move to free Standard membership with nothing to pay, unless you choose to upgrade.

What’s bad etiquette for a single man at a swingers club?

Hovering at the edge of the room, treating being nearby as an invitation, not accepting a no gracefully, and paying attention to only one partner in a couple. Always wait for an invitation before joining in with play, respect both partners equally, and move on politely if the interest isn’t there.
